Decided to put a taper pin on the nose gear attachment. I drilled out the hole to size "S", then got out the taper pin reamer and went at it by hand. Got about halfway and it stopped making chips. Tried a few other things like putting the reamer in the drill motor. Still wasn't making any chips, so I lightly dressed the edges of the reamer with a sharpening stone, and after that made great progress down to the final depth. The taper pin fits snugly and this will keep the gear leg from wearing out the bolt or rounding out the hole.
